A year after launching (and never marketed) its first folding smartphone, the same one we had the opportunity to preview a few months ago in an event in China, Huawei returns to betting on foldables by presenting its latest model. The announcement did not surprise us, also because last year it was Richard Yu himself who confirmed the launch in Europe of his brochure.
It’s called Huawei Mate XS and the (more) perfect similarity with the previous generation will not escape the most attentive, but the new release in addition to having an “S” in the name also has some important updates: an improved Falcon Wing hinge in design , an Kirin 990 5G octa-core processor (instead of the Kirin 980) with support for 5G and a more efficient cooling system. In short, Huawei Mate XS is the natural evolution of the revolutionary foldable Huawei Mate X, the only device that can offer an experience of seamless use, in smartphone and tablet modes.

The Falcon Wing design features more than 100 interlocking components that work in perfect harmony to reinforce the display, while offering a complete user experience in both modes. Made with a zirconium-based liquid metal, the new hinge is much more resistant and makes opening 180 ° simple and linear.
Like its predecessor, the new Huawei Mate XS is equipped with a FullView OLED screen made with a polymeric structure with two layers of aerospace polyimide joined by a transparent adhesive, a unique material that allows the display to reproduce an excellent quality of the image, saturation and brightness, maintaining a high degree of durability.
When open, it has the same dimensions as an 8-inch tablet (with 2480 x 2200 pixel resolution) but – by folding the panel in half outwards – the device offers a 6.6-inch main display (2480 x 1148 pixels) in the front and a smaller 6.4-inch (2480 x 892 pixel) on the back that can be used for shots with selfies from the rear cameras or to make a video call. And it is a necessity since this smartphone does not have front cameras, but only the Leica SuperSensing now made up of four sensors on the back:
40MP wide angle main, f / 1.8
Ultrawide 16MP f / 2.2
8MP OIS f / 2.4 telephoto lens (30x hybrid zoom)
3D Depth Sensing Camera up to ISO 204.800
Powered by the Kirin 990 5G, the Huawei Mate XS benefits from all the strength of Huawei’s most advanced chipset. The SoC includes an octa-core CPU that includes two super-sized Cortex-A76 custom cores, two large Cortex-A76 custom cores and four small Cortex-A55 cores, which run at a base clock of 2.86GHz. Graphics processing is managed by the 16-core Mali-G76 GPU, the most powerful Huawei GPU, while the NPU built on Huawei’s Da Vinci architecture allows AI performance. The Kirin 990 5G SoC has an integrated 5G modem, which allows you to simultaneously provide powerful performance and 5G connectivity with better efficiency and lower heat output. It supports different connection modes: 2G, 3G, 4G, as well as 5G NSA (not stand alone) and SA (stand alone). The SoC supports the full 5G and 5G + 4G Dual SIM Dual Standby spectrum.

Huawei Mate Xs is equipped with the Flying Fish Fin cooling system, custom designed for the folding. This unique system uses flexible graphene with microscopic slits that allow it to fold together with the device and cover the entire surface for uniform and effective cooling. Designed specifically for the compact dimensions of Huawei Mate XS, the 5G antenna is the result of a long research and development process, to ensure stable and high speed connectivity. The rest of the specifications include a 4500 mAh battery, with 55W fast charging support.

Like all the latest smartphones of the brand, the Mate XS will also be sold with HMS (without Google Play Store) and based on EMUI 10.0.1 (Android 10) with support for the Multi-screen Collaboration function, which breaks down the boundaries between devices Windows and Android: users can easily transfer files between Huawei Mate XS and a Huawei MateBook, as well as control two systems from a single display. Huawei Mate XS will also be one of the first Huawei devices to be launched with the renewed version of Huawei AppGallery, Huawei’s official application store. According to what we know, Huawei Mate XS will be available in the coming months in the 8 / 512GB variant at the price of 2599 euros
