The stay of OnePlus 8T at the top of the DisplayMate ranking that has proclaimed its new leader in the past: iPhone 12 Pro Max lasted only a few weeks. A “state-of-the-art” display that passed 11 with flying colors different metrics predicted by the in-depth analysis of the US research laboratory.
iPhone 12 Pro Max achieved an A + score for performance, the highest ever awarded by DisplayMate. The scepter of “Best Smartphone Display” was already touched last year to iPhone 11 Pro Max and before that to Apple’s iPhone XS Max. Other winners in the recent past include Galaxy S20 Ultra and OnePlus 8 before 8T.
Color Gamut in the dark and ambient light
The display of the iPhone 12 Pro Max stood out with regards to calibration accuracy, full screen brightness, high contrast ratio, sharpness, low reflectance and absolute color accuracy. The iPhone 12 Pro Max also received a “visually indistinguishable from perfect” in several categories including “offset in color accuracy and intensity scale” and “offset in image contrast and intensity scale” .
DisplayMate also praised Apple’s proprietary display technologies, True Tone and Night Shift, and noted that the device’s display is also up to about 10% more energy efficient than the previous iPhone 11 Pro Max.
The display of the iPhone 12 Pro Max, remember, is the largest ever made by Apple with its 6.7-inch diagonal and a resolution of 2778 x 1284 pixels. The contrast ratio is 2,000,000: 1, the maximum brightness of 800 nits or 1,200 nits for HDR in addition to support for the wide P3 color gamut.
