Mini PC MintBox

The developers of the Linux Mint operating system have been collaborating with Compulab since 2012, that is when the first Mini PC MintBox was launched as the result of their union, but over the years the family has expanded making space for many small desktop computers with equipment interesting hardware (very often of “mobile class”) and an initial price of $ 500 / euro. As Brad from Lilipunting tells us, the new model will be a bit different: MintBox 3 is still a fanless Mini PC, but high performance with an Intel Core i9-9900K processor, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti graphics, 32GB of RAM and SSD from 1TB.

It is probably the most powerful MintBox launched by the company, but also the most expensive: the top-of-range configuration (described above) is priced at $ 2698, while the SKU with Intel Core i5 esa-core processor, 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage on SSD is for sale at $ 1543.

If the design seems familiar to you, don’t miss out because the new MintBox 3 is basically an AirTop 3 from Compulab, with the only difference being that it has the Mint logo on the front and the pre-installed Linux Mint operating system. The Mini PC measures approximately 30 x 25.5 x 10 centimeters and sports an all-aluminum frame with a passive cooling system, specifically designed to prevent overheating of internal components without the need for a fan or other moving mechanical parts. It supports up to 128GB of RAM thanks to 4 DDR4-2666 SODIMM slots and has 4 slots for 2.5-inch drives and two other M.2 slots that can be used for NVMe SSDs.

Turning to connectivity, MintBox 3 includes two DisplayPort 1.2 ports, an HDMI 1.4, two Gigabit Ethernet ports and six USB 3.1 Gen1 Type-A ports. There is also support for interchangeable FACE modules, which offer different functions to the front panel of the Mini PC: the standard model has a FACE FM-AT3 module that includes a USB 3.1 Type-C Gen2 port, a USB 3.1 Gen2 Type- port A, a USB 3.1 Gen1 Type-A port, a microSD card reader, a mini PCIe slot and an audio jack.

If MintBox 3 is too expensive for your pocket, you could opt for a MintBox 2 Pro and MintBox Mini 2, which cost $ 349/299 respectively but are small fanless PCs with Intel Celeron J3455 processors, integrated graphics and less memory and storage than to the latest model
