OPPO Find X3 will be the first smartphone that will be able to offer authentic and accurate color reproduction, thanks to the new Full-path Color Management System, with support for the entire DCI-P3 range and 10-bit depth in image acquisition, storage and display.
During OPPO INNO Day 2020, the Chinese company also announced the official release of Full-path Color Management System, the first color management system for Android to support the entire DCI-P3 range and color depth a 10 bits of acquisition, storage and display. The first smartphone to be equipped with it will be OPPO Find X3, expected in 2021, which will be able to offer authentic and accurate color reproduction.

Considering that future trends highlight the presence of a wide color gamut and high depth, OPPO’s engineering team has done an excellent job on color reproduction by improving the system and supporting hardware. The system is an end-to-end solution, covering all steps from image capture, computation, encoding, storage, decoding and finally display, supporting a HEIF image with 10-bit color depth and the wide range of colors P3.

“Color inspires creativity and influences our perception of reality. That’s why we’ve improved every aspect of the color management system to add brilliant, high-quality images to more aspects of everyday life. Based on the exceptional color performance of Find X2 Pro, the new Full-path Color Management System has been meticulously developed to support 10-bit image capture and HEIF format. Our goal is to provide our users with a seamless and systematic color experience, which triggers the desire of content creators to explore and express themselves fully. ”

As a management system, Full-path Color Management System has adopted a higher specification algorithm and hardware to record color during capture. OPPO’s R&D engineering department has promoted algorithms in areas such as distortion correction, multi-frame noise reduction, and extreme perceptual super-resolution. In addition, OPPO will support image sensors with HDR Digital Overlap (DOL) mode. In DOL-HDR technology, OPPO synthesizes various exposure conditions into an image. Therefore, bright colors are captured even when images are shot against backlight.

Once we have the right hardware, calibration becomes the next important factor. OPPO’s screen calibration procedure enables professional and digital color accuracy to approximately 0.4 JNCD, thus providing an always accurate display on the screen. On the other hand, OPPO’s proprietary algorithm ensures color gamut compatibility by adjusting the DCI-P3 with the D65 white point in the center of the color space.

Compared to 8-bit depth, 10-bit color depth tones up artificial visual characteristics due to color gaps. The 10-bit color depth further enhances the color gradient to enhance the quality of the visual content during creation and post-editing. Meanwhile, with a size of just about 50% of a JPEG image, the powerful new HEIF format fully supports a wide variety of multimedia content, such as static images, Exif, depth information and dynamic video, thus giving users greater creative freedom. It is also worth mentioning that the HEIF format can be further developed to ensure compatibility with respect to the very high color depth.
