Samsung The Terrace

Samsung has presented the QLED Smart TVs “The Terrace”, a new series specially developed for outdoor use. To make up this range are three models with diagonals of 55 “(55LST7T), 65” (65LST7T) and 75 “(75LST7T). The panels are all VA type Ultra HD LCD with Quantum Dot and Full LED Array Local Dimming backlight (HERE our insight into technology).

The construction is obviously different from the other QLED TVs of the 2020 range (HERE all the details are available). The chassis is made of metal to ensure greater robustness. All models are IP55 certified and can therefore withstand dust and splashes of water (small quantities that accidentally end up on the products). The remote control has also been designed to withstand harsher environmental conditions. The One Remote is the same silver-colored control unit that accompanies higher-end QLED TVs. Here is added the IP56 certification.

The panels are equipped with an anti-glare treatment which makes them more suitable to counteract the presence of strong natural light sources. The technical specifications speak of Motion Rate 240 and therefore of the possibility of applying motion interpolation to improve (as well as to increase fluidity) the rendering of moving images. The refresh rate of the panels is set at 100/120 Hz. As for the backlight, Samsung measures the performance in terms of Direct Full Array 16x, a figure that takes into consideration the backlight with zone control, the contribution provided by the treatment anti-glare and technologies to increase the contrast ratio.

The Terrace supports HDR videos in HDR10, HDR10 + formats with dynamic metadata and HLG. The data that measures performance is the Quantum HDR 32x which takes the form of peaks of around 2,000 cd / m2 – nits. We expect the remarkable power of the backlight to be useful also in SDR (standard dynamic range) to contrast natural light. The viewing angle should be wider than conventional VA panels thanks to the Wide Viewing Angle technology.

As with all QLEDs, a relative color volume is declared (HERE we explain what it is and why it is important) equal to 100% for the DCI-P3 color space. In common with the 2020 range is also the possibility to take advantage of the Adaptive Picture function, developed to adapt brightness and contrast based on the light detected by the special sensors integrated in the TV (more details are available HERE). For video game enthusiasts we point out the Real Game Enhancer +, a series of automatisms aimed at reducing the latency in the commands (input lag) and phenomena such as “tearing” and “stuttering”.

The Smart TV is obviously based on Tizen and reproduces practically all the functions already announced on the other QLED 2020. We therefore find Ambient Mode +, TV Plus, Multi View, Tap View and support for the voice assistants Bixby, Alexa and Google Assistant. Connectivity provides unconventional features. We refer specifically to an integrated HDBase-T receiver, useful for carrying HDMI signals (apparently up to Ultra HD resolution at 30 Hz) on an Ethernet cable. A housing called Media Bay, located on the back, then allows you to host a dongle such as Chromecast or Fire TV Stick to make sure that the aforementioned devices are protected from external agents. The dimensions of the compartment are approximately 14 x 2.5 x 20 cm.

Obviously there is also dual-band Wi-Fi ac, Bluetooth, a USB port, an RS-232 port on a 3.5 mm jack, an optical output, an Ethernet port and three HDMI inputs. The features of HDMI 2.1 support should include Auto Low Latency Mode, eARC and HFR (Ultra HD signals up to 120 frames per second), although the indications present in the online manuals (the only ones that allow you to recover this information) are not very clear in some points since shared with the whole TV 2020 range. We therefore await further confirmations regarding HDMI 2.1.

We close with the audio section, consisting of two 20 W speakers each with additional support for Dolby Digital Plus. The list prices are as follows:

55 “: $ 3,499.99
65 “: $ 4,999.99
75 “: $ 6,499.99
The Terrace are arriving in the United States and Canada and will then arrive in Germany, Australia, New Zealand and other countries during the year. For now there are no precise indications regarding Italy.

Outdoor TVs can be combined with The Terrace Soundbar (HW-LST70T), a soundbar designed with the same approach used for almost homonymous televisions. We therefore find the IP55 certification. The product measures 122 x 14 x 5.3 cm with a weight of 6.7 kilograms. The thickness has been reduced to facilitate wall installation (the necessary kit is supplied).
